of Scotchtown residents (1926 to 2000)
PETER
WARNER (Middletown Times Press,
6 September 1927)
Peter Warner died Monday at his
home, 56 South street, after three
weeks’ illness, at the age
of 73 years. Mr. Warner was born
in the town of Wallkill, the son
of Peter and Susan Conning Warner.
On February 9, 1887, he married
Mary J. Free at St. Paul’s
M. E. Church. He has been a resident
of this city for 50 years, being
a contractor by occupation. Mr.
Warner became a member of the Scotchtown
Presbyterian church at 18 years
of age, and when he moved to this
city he transferred his letter to
the A.M.E. Zion church, of which
he was a devoted member, having
held all the official offices. He
had been a lifelong superintendent
of the Sunday school. Mr. Warner
was one of the Pioneer band of this
city; also was musical director
for a number of years. He was also
a member of Newburgh Lodge, L. U.,
I.O.O.F., Pride of Orange Lodge,
N.J., and Tyrl Masonic Lodge, No.
8, of this city. He is survived
by his wife and one daughter, Mrs.
Mabel L. Garner; a son, Ezra, of
Middletown; a brother, Albert Newkirk
Warner, and a sister, Carolina Bull
Warner, of this city. Burial will
be in Hillside Cemetery.

ANDREW C. SANTEE (New York Times,
17 October 1933)
Middletown, N.Y., Oct. 16 –
Dr. Andrew C. Santee, chief of the
medical staff of Horton Memorial
Hospital here, member of the Board
of Education and health officer
of the towns of Wallkill and Wawayanda,
died today at his home after a long
illness. Born sixty-nine years ago
in Luzerne County, Pa., Dr. Santee
practiced medicine in Scotchtown
for forty years before he moved
to Middletown sixteen years ago.
He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania
School of Anatomy and Surgery, Philadelphia
College of Pharmacy and Jefferson
Medical College. Dr. Santee is survived
by his widow, a daughter, Miss Mildred
I. Santee, and two sons, Harry A.
of Middletown and Clyde B. Santee
of New York.

ALEXANDER J. KERR (New York Times,
15 May 1942)
Albany, N.Y., May 14 – The
Rev. Alexander J. Kerr, one of Princeton’s
oldest alumni and authority on Presbyterian
church history, died today at the
age of 89 in a convalescent home
at Selkirk. He was a classmate of
the late President Woodrow Wilson
at the university. Mr. Kerr retired
from the active ministry two years
ago. He had served churches in San
Francisco, New York, Princeton,
Ind.; Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Middletown,
N.Y. He was a member of many Masonic
organizations. Surviving are a daughter,
Mrs. Mercy O. Daley of Delmar, N.Y.,
and a son, E. S. Wells Kerr of Exeter,
N.H. Mr. Kerr was born in Scotland,
had been pastor of the Presbyterian
Church in Freedom Plains, N.Y.,
until 1924, when he went to Scotchtown
(N.Y.) Presbyterian Church. He served
there until 1940 when he became
pastor emeritus. Mr. Kerr was moderator
of the Presbytery of North River
in 1923. He was a delegate from
the Presbytery of Hudson to the
New York Presbyterian Synod in 1938
and opposed a resolution condemning
mandatory loyalty oaths by teachers.
MARY
J. SLOAT (Middletown Times Herald,
12 March 1946)
Scotchtown – Miss Mary J.
Sloat, a native of Scotchtown, and
for many years a teacher at Bloomfield,
N.J., died suddenly yesterday at
the home of her niece, Mrs. Edward
W. Chapin, in Rahway, N.J. Miss
Sloat, who had spent the past few
years with relatives in Scotchtown,
Rahway and Monticello, was born
in Scotchtown April second, 1863,
a daughter of Alexander C. and Matilda
Farnum Sloat. She was a graduate
of Albany Normal School, class of
1885. Surviving are her niece Minnie
Sloat Chapin of Rahway; and five
nephews, Charles Alex Comfort of
Scotchtown, Newman Comfort of Oakland,
Calif., John A. Sloat of Monticello,
Francis E. Sloat of Cranford, N.J.,
and Leslie W. Sloat of LaGrange,
Ill. Funeral services will be conducted
Thursday at two p.m. at the Scotchtown
Presbyterian Church, of which she
was a member. Burial will be in
the family plot, Scotchtown Cemetery.
ALBERT
NEWKIRK WARNER (Middletown Times
Herald, 1 November 1948)
Albert Newkirk Warner,
ten Hoffman Street, stone mason
and brick layer here, died at his
home Saturday. Mr. Warner had been
a Middletown resident for sixty-five
years. He was born in Scotchtown,
September sixteenth, 1859, a son
of Peter and Susan Conning Warner.
He was married to Elizabeth Stoops
here by the Rev.
David E. Beattie of Scotchtown.
He was a member of Bethel A.M.E.
Church and St. Paul's Methodist
Bible Church Class. Surviving are
seven sons, the Rev. James H. of
Middletown; LeRoy of California,
Peter of Chester, Ernest, Albert
and Melvin, all of Middletown and
Loren of Newburgh. Five daughters,
Daisy Chandler of Middletown; Gladys,
wife of Herbert Jarvis; Beatrice,
wife of William O’Neil; Shirley,
wife of Alonzo Williams of Philadelphia,
Pa., and Mrs. Louis Mann of Middletown
also survive him, as do a sister,
Miss Carrie Warner of Middletown,
thirty-nine grandchildren and three
great grandchildren. The Rev. Samuel
Greene and the Rev. James Warner,
his son, will officiate at the funeral
services on Tuesday at two p.m.
at St. John's A.M.E. Zion Church.
Interment will be in the family
plot of Hillside Cemetery.
GOTTLOB
KLUMP (Times Herald-Record, 12 June
1964)
Scotchtown – Gottlop Klumpp,
a retired metal manufacturer, died
Tuesday at his home on Scotchtown
Road. He was 85. A native of Germany,
Mr. Klumpp was married to the former
Pauline Weber who survives. Also
surviving are two sons, Frank and
Carl, of New York City. Funeral
services will be private.
HERMAN
F. BLUMEL (Times Herald-Record,
10 July 1964)
Middletown – Herman F. Blumel,
72, of R.D. 2, Middletown, died
Thursday at the Earle Nursing Home
after a long illness. A retired
dairy farmer, he was a resident
of Scotchtown for forty years. He
was born in Phillipsburg, April
23, 1892, the son of Carl H. and
Henrietta Kunert Blumel. He married
Cecilia Seyler Jan. 11, 1922, in
Middletown. Mr. Blumel was an elder
and trustee of the Scotchtown Presbyterian
Church. He is survived by his wife,
two sons, Herman F. Blumel, Jr.,
and the Rev. Benjamin E. Blumel
of Old Washington, Ohio, seven grandchildren,
and one sister, Mrs. Lena Wood of
Middletown. The Rev. Robert W. Hoag
of the Scotchtown Presbyterian Church
will conduct funeral services at
the Ralston Funeral Home at 2 Saturday.
Friends may call at the funeral
home from 7 to 9 Friday. Interment
will be in the Wallkill Cemetery,
Phillipsburg.
JESSIE
PUFF (Times Herald-Record, 18 August
1964)
Funeral services will be held this
afternoon for Miss Jessie Puff 86-year
old lifetime resident of Scotchtown,
who died Saturday in Middletown.
Miss Puff, born July 3, 1878 to
William H. and Helen Bookstaver
Puff, celebrated her 85th birthday
in July 1963 at a party given by
more than 100 friends and neighbors
in the Scotchtown section. Miss
Puff operated, almost singlehandedly,
the farm bequeathed her by her father.
Survivors are three cousins, Mrs.
Anita M. Comfort, and Mrs. Bertha
Dingee, both of Scotchtown; and
Mrs. Claude Stone, of Riverside,
Calif. Services will be held at
2 p.m. at the Scotchtown Presbyterian
Church, of which Miss Puff was a
member. The Rev. Robert Hoag will
officiate. Burial will be in Scotchtown
Cemetery.
EUGENE
LYBOLT (Times Herald-Record, 6 January
1965)
Eugene Lybolt, 94, of RD #1, Middletown,
died in his son’s home Tuesday
after a short illness. He was born
in Summitville March 18, 1870, the
son of Mr. and Mrs. James Lybolt.
He married the late Emeline Martin
in 1889 and was a member of the
Scotchtown Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by one son, Fred
Lybolt, 219 Watkins Ave.; three
grandsons, six granddaughters, and
eight great-grandchildren. Funeral
services will be held at 2 Thursday
in the Ralston Funeral Home with
the Rev. Robert Hoag officiating.
Burial will be at the Wallkill Cemetery.
Friends May call from 2 to 4 and
7 to 9 Wednesday.
ANITA
M. COMFORT (Times Herald-Record,
14 October 1976)
Mrs. Anita M. Comfort, 84, of 234
Goshen Turnpike North, in Scotchtown,
died Tuesday at Horton Memorial
Hospital, Middletown. She was a
life-long resident of this area.
A former teacher in the Union School,
Mrs. Comfort was born in Montgomery,
Oct. 21, 1891. She was married to
Charles A. Comfort, who survives.
Mrs. Comfort was a graduate of Port
Jervis Training Class, a member
of Scotchtown Presbyterian Church
and the church’s missionary
society, and a Sunday school teacher
there. She also was a member of
the Pioneer Girls, the Home Bureau
and the Bullville Grange. Surviving
her are her husband, at home; two
sons, William T. of Walden and Milton
E. of Middletown, a daughter, Mrs.
Marion C. Richter, Magdalena, N.M.;
12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
Robert W. Hoag will officiate. Friends
may call at her residence, 234 Goshen
Turnpike North, on this afternoon
and evening. Burial will be in the
Scotchtown Cemetery, Scotchtown.

Funeral Home, Inc. in Middletown.

HOWARD
D. MILLS SR. (Times Herald-Record,
17 December 1976)
Scotchtown – Howard D. Mills
Sr., 90, of 281 N. Goshen Road,
Scotchtown, died Thursday at his
residence. The son of Jacob and
Emma Cumming Mills, he was born
Dec. 3, 1886, in Scotchtown and
lived here all his life. Mr. Mills
was a retired dairy and fruit farmer
and a retired beekeeper. He was
a member of the Scotchtown Presbyterian
Church and was a former elder and
trustee of the church. He was a
member of the National Grange, the
Northeastern Beekeepers Association,
[and] the National Apple Association.
Mr. Mills was also a former superintendent
of the Scotchtown Cemetery, and
a member of the Horticulture Society
and the Farm Bureau. He is survived
by his widow, the former Mabel Scott;
two sons, Howard D. Jr. and John
E., both of Scotchtown; two daughters,
Mrs. Virginia M. Dorsman of West
Grove, Pa., and Miss Elizabeth Mills
of Scotchtown; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday
at the Scotchtown Presbyterian Church,
with the Rev. Robert Hoag officiating.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m.
today at the Ralston Funeral Home,
72 W. Main St., Middletown. Burial
will be in the Scotchtown Cemetery.

CHARLES
F. ALEXANDER (Times Herald-Record, 14 March 1983)
Charles F. Alexander of Collabar Road, Middletown,
a retired electrician with Orange & Rockland Utilities,
died Saturday, March 12, at Arden Hill Hospital, Goshen.
He was 59. The son of Thomas U. Alexander and the
late Sarah DeFreese Alexander, he was born April 17,
1923, in Hillburn. Mr. Alexander was a member and
Elder of the Scotchtown Presbyterian Church, Scotchtown;
a member of IBEW Union Local 503; and a volunteer
driver for the Meals on Wheels Program. Survivors
include his wife, Charlotte Morgan Alexander, at home;
three sons: Michael W. Alexander of Middletown, Richard
B. Alexander of Pine Bush, and Barry F. Alexander
of Upland, Calif.; two daughters, Karen L. Alexander
of Middletown, and Gail A. Alexander, at home; his
father, of Fair Oaks; three brothers: Edward Alexander
of Monticello, Leonard Alexander of Fair Oaks, and
Donald Alexander of Hillburn; a sister, Mildred Gallindez
of Hillburn; a granddaughter, serveral nieces and
nephews. Burial will be in Airmont Cemetery, Suffern.
FRANK
DeGROAT (Times Herald-Record, 7

Frank DeGroat of Scotchtown Silver
Lake Road, Scotchtown, a lifelong
area resident died unexpectedly,
Friday, Feb. 5, at Horton Memorial
Hospital, Middletown. He was 39.
The son of George and Rose Mapes
DeGroat, he was born Feb. 5, 1949,
in Middletown. Survivors include
his parents of Schenectady; two
brothers, Melvin DeGroat of Schenectady
and George DeGroat of Middletown;
seven sisters, Mary Mason, Joan
Walker, Jean DeGroat and Barbara
DeGroat, all of Schenectady, and
Madeline Lewis, Florence VanDunk
and Rose Williams, all of Middletown;
and several nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
